Martin Finnegan Dies in Tragic Accident

Talented Irishman Martin Finnegan has tragically lost his life competing in the Tandragee 100 event this weekend. Finnegan who was competing for the JMF Millsport Yamaha team died in the accident at Marlacoo Corner. Finnegan had earlier won the opening race of the day which was his 43rd road race victory of his career.

Bikers Beware! 14th March Most Dangerous Day To Ride A Motorbike

Statistics released today by Bennetts, the nation’s favourite bike insurance provider, reveal that bikers need to be extra vigilant on the roads on Friday 14th March - it was the most prolific day for motorbike accidents in 2007*. Based on actual claims data, the report shows that the first half of the year is worst for biking accidents and riders should pay most attention between March and June. Bikers planning to take to the roads over the May Bank Holiday weekend also need to ride with caution. With many already planning to take advantage of the long weekend, the data reveals that 2nd May shares the top spot as the most dangerous day to ride, closely followed by 3rd May.

Rampaging youths threw Molotov cocktails and torched cars in a troubled neighborhood outside Paris in a second night of street violence Monday after two teenagers on a motorbike were killed in a crash with a police car.

Operation Confirms Paralysis For KTM's Isidre Esteve Pujol

KTM factory rider Isidre Esteve Pujol of Spain underwent surgery on Friday in Barcelona, Spain to stabilize a spinal injury sustained during a high speed crash last weekend. The Spanish rider was injured while competing in the Spanish All Terrain Rally. Specialists Dr. Villanova and Dr. Meir have reported after the operation that the level of injury to the 7th and 8th vertebrae was such that the rider has suffered paralysis from the waist down. They must now wait for inflammation to subside from the spinal column to establish if any further treatment is at all possible.

It's The Quiet Ones You Have To Watch - Men Taking More Risks Than Women On Quiet Rural Roads They Think Are 'Safer'

Male drivers are more than twice as likely as women to assume good road conditions are safer and then take dangerous risks, according to a new national survey. Figures also revealed that in 2005 more people died on rural roads in the South East than in any other area of England, and more than the total for Scotland and Wales put together.

How Close is Too Close?

The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG UK) in collaboration with motorcycle trainer, Duncan MacKillop, has investigated the cause of accidents involving cars and motorcycles at T junctions: the ‘Sorry Mate I Didn’t See You’ accidents or SMIDSYs. The result of this collaboration is the MAG document ‘How Close is Too Close?’ that provides solutions for avoidance and evasion strategies for motorcyclists. The study makes recommendations that include better road awareness training for car drivers and motorcyclists to reduce the number of deaths to riders caused by cars.

Truck Crash Causes Setback For Kawasaki

The Kawasaki Racing Team's preparations for the coming MotoGP season suffered a setback on Monday, when the team's race transporter was involved in a road traffic accident while travelling from Barcelona to Jerez. Just two hours after leaving Barcelona, the Kawasaki race transporter was buffeted by ferocious winds as it travelled along the highway around Peniscola, forcing the transporter to leave the road and onto uneven ground, where it toppled over at speed.

MAG Push for Rider Safety

The Motorcycle Action Group are delighted that the Department of Transport has finally recognised that the thickness of many modern cars' "A" pillars poses a big safety issue. For some time now, MAG has been arguing this point for some years now and resisted efforts to make bikers wear fluorescent clothing and burn headlights in daytime. MAG has long considered the conspicuity of the rider to be a "red herring" which distracts attention from the real causes of accidents.

Driver Faces Jail After Biker's Death

A TV producer who fled the scene of a fatal crash, in which a biker died, then claimed to have passed out in a field overnight, before contacting the Police, faces jail. Dafydd Evans, 41, left Darran Beynon, 24, dead, or dying, on the A40, rather than face Police and take a breath test for drunk driving. Evans had been at a Christening party earlier that day. Evans, pulled onto the A40 at Dryslwyn in October 2004 into the path of Mr Beynon's motorcycle. The Yamaha motorbike turned into a fireball on impact. Witnesses described the scene as `carnage.'

UK Accident DFT Stats For 2004

The UK DFT agency has released its 2004 road accidents statistics report, which makes for interesring reading. The good news for bikers is that serious and fatal accidents were down, by a substantial 16%. But the bad news is that the department's own flawed system of calculating statistical trends lists this as only being a 10% reduction.

A new government-backed website aims to cut the number of motorcycle crashes by encouraging riders to record details of their accidents on a map of Britain. The Highways Agency, which is funding the project, says the map will become the most comprehensive guide to accident black spots available. The website will include existing motorbike crash data from 2003 (the most recent available) as well as information added by bikers about their own accidents.

Senior TT tragedy

The organisers of the Isle of Man TT Races, the Manx Motor Cycle Club Limited, regret to announce that a competitor was fatally injured in an incident during today’s Senior TT. A race marshal also died in the same incident.

The following news release has just been published, but we can't help but question how the Police chiefs reconcile the obvious discrepency between the lowering of average road speeds with the increase in accidents, what exactly is the point in being so aggressive on speeding when there's an undeniable torrent of data, statistics and studies that show speeding pays such a marginal part in the cause of most accidents? It seems to us that they have it all wrong and are just out to make money from the majority of motorists, who according to this news release, feel their speeds above the stated speed limit, are acceptable.
