The cost of living is one thing, the cost of riding is another, with a figure of £1000 being revealed as the average spend on riding kit for today’s modern motorcyclist.

In a recent customer survey commissioned Infinity Motorcycles, one of the UK’s biggest motorcycle clothing and accessory retailers, the average annual spend on riding equipment was £960.

Leather was the most popular material for clothing, (jackets, jeans and suits), accounting for the biggest average spend per customer at £321. Helmets came next at £241, proving that riders aren’t afraid to put their hands in their pockets when it comes to safety. Textile clothing came a respectable third, at £183 per person, followed by boots at £138 and gloves coming in at a respectable £77.

Popularity wise, gloves were the surprise leader in the annual purchase round, accounting for some 73% of spending, closely followed by helmets at 68%, boots at 64%, textile clothing at 63% and leathers at 52%.

When it came to brands, Infinity customers showed that they were very astute and were not always dazzled by the big name brands. Over 72% said that they recognized some brands were known more by association than by quality, comfort or value for money, so were quite happy to buy lesser known brands if they were seen to do an equivalent job.

Motorcyclists also showed themselves to be canny when it came to getting the best deal. While the vast majority of customers used the web to find the best prices and to narrow down choices, when it came to clothing and helmets, 77% of customers still prefer to buy face to face.

Infinity MD, Rob Puttick:

“What these figures show is that motorcyclists recognise the importance of good quality kit to protect them from accidents and the elements, which is why we focus on stocking a wide range of products from respected brands”.
