Back protection in one form or another is thought to be a must by many motorcyclists; this is especially true in situations with higher than normal risk of coming off e.g. a track day. Although, who knows when that might happen when you're simply commuting. Knox have given their AEGIS back protector a cool new look for Summer 2008, with the introduction of an ice white spine section.
Available in seven sizes, covering men, women and children, the AEGIS is literally cooler than most, thanks to its superior ventilation system that combines breathing holes with venturi technology to draw out hot air. Other features to stop the wearer getting hot and bothered include self-adjusting shoulder straps that won’t slip off or dig in and a multi-position waist strap. This can be adjusted not only for length, but also offers six different height positions, allowing precision fitting to all lengths of torso.
The AEGIS also delivers in terms of protection. Inclined cell wall technology provides improved energy absorption so the AEGIS is independently tested and approved to EN1621-2 Level 2, which is the highest rating possible under current EU regulations. However Knox have added extra protection, extending the plates over the vulnerable coccyx (‘tailbone’) and providing kidney sections in soft PU that attach to the waist belt with Velcro.
For those of you who aren't familiar with the them, Knox is a British company with 25 year’s experience of protection for motorcyclists. They were the first Company in the world to produce CE-approved protectors for motorcyclists.
Prices vary according to size –
the smallest version, for children, is £49.99, while a standard 8-plate for an adult male retails for £89.99 including VAT.
It is possible to fit a Knox CE-approved chest protector, which sells for £24.99.
