Donington Park has been given a prime mid-season date for the 2009 British Motorcycle Grand Prix – in the calendar announced by the FIM, the sport’s worldwide governing body, the Leicestershire circuit will host the tenth round of the premier series over the weekend of 24/25/26 July, a month later than this year’s record breaking event.
Next year’s event will be the 23rd consecutive running of Britain’s rounds of the FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix at Donington Park, the first being held on August 2nd 1987 when Australian Wayne Gardner took the premier honours and the most recent, last month, won by Casey Stoner.
“It’s a prime time of the year to hold Britain’s premier motorcycle race in the UK”, said Donington Park’s Chief Executive Simon Gillett “and we are delighted to be able to have the date announced so far in advance, that the record crowd that attended this year’s event can plan their arrangements accordingly.”
“We will continue to provide the best possible programme of entertainment for the event, on and off the track,” added Gillett who is delighted that the new date falls at the half-way point of the 18 round championship, immediately ahead of the annual summer break.
Donington Park’s current 5-year MotoGP contract lasts until the 2009 event, and Donington Park are currently in negotiation with MotoGP rights holders Dorna for the continuation of the contract into the next decade.
