World Champion Casey Stoner simply destroyed all the records and all the competition in the first day of practice for the Red Bull US Grand Prix in California today (Friday). The 22 year old Marlboro Ducati rider started where he left off in his last three successive grand prix victories by decimating his own pole time record in the morning practice in cool conditions round the demanding 2.243 miles circuit near the Californian Pacific coastline.
In the warmer afternoon session the Australian was equally impressive and in a class of his own as he seeks to repeat his victory of last year and close that 20 point gap on Championship leader Valentino Rossi. Stoner led the way after the two sessions by over eight tenths of one second from Laguna double winner American Nicky Hayden riding the Repsol Honda. Championship leader Rossi could not improve on his morning time and was third fastest
AMA Champion Ben Spies crashed in the morning session without injury on his second MotoGP appearance riding the Rizla Suzuki. Australian Anthony West crashed in the afternoon also without injured ,but the session was stopped to mend the broken air fence.
It was a tough opening day for Yorkshireman James Toseland. Riding the Tech 3 Yamaha, he improved his lap times by nearly eight tenths of one second but was 16th fastest, over two seconds behind the flying Stoner.
