Following the conclusion of the Southern 100 races, it’s a quick dash to North Yorkshire for the annual Cock o’ the North Road Races.
Mention the Oliver’s Mount Circuit to the knowledgeable race fan and one name will spring to mind - Ian Lougher.
In the 60 years history of the closed public roads circuit in the seaside resort of Scarborough, the honour of the most wins goes to the experienced Welshman, with his tally currently standing at 103 victories, a quite astonishing feat.
Lougher made his Oliver’s Mount debut at the September 1984 International meeting riding a TZ350 Yamaha with support from the late, much missed Ray Cowles and took his first chequered flag five years later during the 1989 Steve Henshaw International Gold Cup meeting in the first leg of the 125cc race, heading home top British Championship contenders Rob Orme and Steve Lawton.
The magical 100th win was achieved in the first leg of the 250cc GP event at the 2007 Cock o’ the North Road Races, to the rapturous applause of the crowd that had braved the pouring rain.
This year, Ian goes in nine events…..it would take a brave person to bet against him making it 103 plus!
The 2008 Cock o’ the North Road Races take place on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July.
