Acceleration Racing's Clint McBain scored a convincing victory on his Alberta Cycle, Suzuki Dealer Group-sponsored GSX-R1000 at round two of the Parts Canada Superbike Championships at Race City Speedway in Calgary, Alberta.
After missing the first round due to a shoulder injury, McBain was on a mission to get back into championship contention at the Calgary round. When he set an all-out new lap record in qualifying on Friday at 1:15:751 there was no questioning his readiness for the race and in the final, he took his GSX-R1000 across the line with a 9:259 second margin of victory ahead of current champion, Jordan Szoke.
A total of six Suzuki GSX-R1000s finished in the top 10 including Team Suzuki/ Blackfoot Direct/ Picotte Performance riders Chris Peris (4th), Francis Martin (6th) and Matt McBride (7th).
The Yoshimura Pro 600 race turned into a heated four-way battle among the leaders with Team Suzuki/ Blackfoot Direct/ Picotte Performance rider Chris Peris right in the middle of the intense action. Peris had moved his GSX-R600 into second place and was looking to make a move on Szoke for the lead when the race was red-flagged. With 15 laps completed, the race was declared official and Peris took home second place honours on his GSX-R600.
Team mate Matt McBride brought his GSX-R600 across the stripe in sixth place with local Calgary rider John Ross MacRae coming in eighth on his GSX-R600.
In the Armour Bodies Amateur 600 race the real action was the battle for third place. Jodi Christie had secured the lead with Suzuki GSX-R600-mounted Patrick Marques following in second while further back, Suzuki GSX-R600-mounted Martin Grande was having a fierce battle with Marcel Irnie. The two riders battled back and forth, changing positions numerous times and on the final lap, Grande made a slight error coming out of Race City's famous "Bus Stop". While averting a crash, Grande had to settle for fourth place and heads back East tied for second place in the championship with Suzuki-mounted Patrick Marques.
The Suzuki SV Cup race provided fans with the most entertaining battle for victory of the day. Round one winner John Jarvie had his hands full with the challenge mounted by 14-year-old sensation Cody Matechuk. Just missing the podium in round one, Matechuk was now at his home track and ready to take on all comers in the Suzuki SV Cup race. Although it was Jarvie's first visit to Race City, he came to terms quickly with the circuit and was awarded Pole position in qualifying action. Matechuk, who also happens to be Superbike winner, Clint McBain's step-son, was not about to be denied victory on his home track and losing out on pole gave him even more incentive for race day. The SV Cup race was the best back and forth battle of the weekend with Matechuk taking the victory over Jarvie by 0.882 seconds.
