Championship chasing Elite League Speedway team, the Lakeside Hammers, have confessed to being 'astonished' by the response to their charity initiative on behalf of CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA. To cap off a resounding victory against reigning champions Coventry in Monday night's live Sky Sports broadcast, team owner Stuart Douglas has been bowled over by the generosity of the Hammers fans.

"Initially, the idea was to use our television presence to help increase the awareness of this charity and their fantastic work for the children and their respective families," said Douglas. "Then the idea of auctioning a signed, unique piece of the rider’s racewear carrying the CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA branding gathered momentum, and I am blown away by the astonishing response. It is a hard economy at the moment and I can't thank enough everybody who has participated and donated. There are still good people in the world, and It makes me really proud of the Speedway community."

The final tally from voluntary pledges and the collection at the track won't be known until the auction closes at 3.00pm this Friday, 4th July, but is expected to top several thousand pounds.

CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA is the foremost charity in the UK dedicated to fighting the biggest childhood cancer.

It is still not too late to put in your bids and the auction can be accessed via the Club’s website at www.lakesidehammers.com
