The Lakeside Hammers, Britain’s fastest growing Speedway team, has seized the opportunity of their TV deal to throw their weight behind one of the Country’s most important charities.
Monday 30th June sees the Sky Sports cameras broadcasting live from the Arena Essex Raceway, home circuit of the Hammers, as they take on current British Champions, the Coventry Bees, in the highly competitive top flight Speedway Elite League. The promotional duo of Jon Cook and Stuart Douglas have chosen this date to show their support for CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA, the UK’s leading charity dedicated to fighting Britain’s biggest childhood cancer.
“The Sky team do such a great job bringing Speedway to a massive television audience that it is customary to look for a route to capitalise on this commercially.” said Cook. “Our fans and public are getting accustomed to the fact that at the Hammers, we do things differently. This was our way of making a small gesture back into our community and using our Sport to highlight the fantastic work that this charity does.”
Team owner, Stuart Douglas, explained further:
“Last time the cameras were here we let all the fans in for nothing to bring Speedway to a new audience. We wanted to go one better this time, and to dedicate the whole meeting not only to those that have suffered cruelly from the shadow of leukaemia, but also to celebrate those people who give their all to help fight the illness and to give the children a chance. As Dads, Jon and I know what affects children, affects us all”.
CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to the conquest of childhood leukaemia through pioneering research, new treatment and support of leukaemic children and their families.
Sky Sports TV presenter, and triple World Champion Longtrack rider, Kelvin Tatum MBE, approved of the initiative and commented: “Speedway is a family orientated sport, and if we can use our influence to highlight this charity and its work and bring it to a greater, wider audience, then so much the better. I’m looking forward to a great race meeting for a good cause.”
The in form Hammers, who have only lost once in their last nine outings, will wear a specially designed race jacket carrying the CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA name which will then be auctioned off to the fans to raise funds for the charity.
“These jackets are a one off.” said Cook. “It will be fantastic for our fans to bid for a unique piece of Hammers history, and know they are helping many less fortunate than themselves.”
The much anticipated meeting starts with the riders’ parade at 7.20, with the meeting going live on Sky Sports at 7.30.
The Hammers promoters, Jon Cook and Stuart Douglas, will be pleased to provide personal interviews and make additional comments regarding this initiative to members of the Press and Media.
