Fans of the AMA Flat Track Championship who were disappointed by the heavy rains that shut down the Springfield Mile's scheduled Memorial Day run should circle labour Day weekend on their calendars now. labour Day, the other traditional weekend for AMA flat track racing in Springfield, Ill., will now feature two main events to make up for the cancelled race.

The second mile main event rounds out four days of dirt-track racing on the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield on labour Day weekend, Aug. 29 through Sept. 1.

Amateur short track racing kicks off the weekend Friday before the professional AMA Flat Track short track event on Saturday. Sunday will feature the first running of the Springfield Mile, while the programme will wrap up on labour Day with a second race on the storeyed oval track.

"Unfortunately, Mother Nature won out on Memorial Day, but luckily the Illinois Motorcycle Dealers Association, which promotes the Springfield events, went straight to work and scheduled a second mile race for labour Day weekend," said AMA Flat Track Director Ken Saillant.

"The Springfield weekends are already highlights of the AMA Flat Track Championship calendar, but this addition makes the labour Day event one of the can't-miss race dates of the year."

With the short-track featuring AMA Grand National Singles Championship racing, which showcases converted motocross bikes running 450cc four-stroke singles, and the mile running the traditional AMA GNC Twins programme, fans at Springfield will get to see the world's greatest dirt-track talent on a range of equipment.
