Quay Garage Racing’s winning form returned at Donington Park on Bank Holiday Monday, with new rider Gary Mason finishing second in the Superbike Cup in Race One and bringing the team’s Honda Fireblade home in first place in the second race.
Even though this was Gary’s first outing on the Quay Garage CBR1000RR Fireblade, he qualified first out of the Cup riders and ninth overall on the grid, ahead of several leading Superbike team riders, including Team Yamaha’s Karl Harris and Tom Sykes of Rizla Suzuki.
Race one was run in dry but blustery conditions and the safety car was deployed on lap eight when Luke Quigley's machine caught fire on the run to the Melbourne Loop. Mason had to contend with not only an unfamiliar machine but also a leaking rear shock absorber. In spite of this he brought the bike home second out of all the Cup riders, behind first placed John Laverty on the North West 200 Ducati and hanging onto the coat tales of Rizla Suzuki rider Atsushi Watanabe,
In Race Two there was no stopping Gary Mason on the Quay Honda - he took first place in the Cup Championship, finishing an overall 10th, with the following Cup rider, John Laverty finishing down in 16th. Gary posted the fastest lap of the Cup riders in the race and crossed the line comfortably ahead of several experienced superbike racers, including Stuart Easton, Scott Smart and Atsushi Watanabe.
The team will be back in action at Snetterton on 13th-15th June.
