Fan favourite Sean Emmett grabbed a hatful of useful points at a cold and very windy Donington Park this weekend with fourth and fifth places in the Henderson Yamaha R1 Cup.
Surrey man Sean had kept his pole position from the abandoned race at Brands Hatch in April. The wind was a major factor in his fourth place but Sean was honest and said: “For some reason I just didn’t have the pace. I started from pole but Jon [Kirkham] came past and he was uncatchable, in a different league.
“It was very windy and kept moving the bike around so I just put my head down and settled for the points instead. Most of the big crashes I have had have been at Donington, so I just rode for fourth.”
In between races, Sean made some adjustments to the rear suspension in an attempt to stiffen it up and help reduce some of the squat. It helped as Sean felt much more comfortable on the bike for race two.
“I spent a lot of the second race swapping places with Adrian [Coates]. I thought that if I could hang in with him, I could mug him for the place on the last lap as I was stronger on the brakes but he managed to get away.
“Then Gary [Mason] came underneath me at McLean’s and made me lift the bike up. It was a fair move, though, and I would have done the same to him. I like riding with Gary.
“I couldn’t stay with him so I thought it best to ride around at 90 per cent and get points for fifth instead of binning it. I’m happy with the way I rode and happy with the bike, so it was a good weekend.
“I am going to have to do something about Jon at Snetterton before he gets an unassailable lead. I like it there and have done the double on Superbikes before, so I’m looking forward to it.”
