KTM rider Bernd Hiemer has secured the crown in the S1 class of the 2006 Supermoto World Championship in the penultimate round held in Latina/Italy. The German underlined his supremacy and picked up his first world championship title with a convincing victory in the first race and a tactically clever second place.
Hiemer is the new S1-Supermoto world champion! The 23-year-old German has already secured the title in superior style on his 630 SMS in the second last event of the 2006 season in Latina, Italy, just days after renewing his contract with KTM for a further two seasons.
Hiemer laid the foundation for this huge success in the first race on the “Il Sagittario” circuit when he drifted to a clear victory by a margin of more than two seconds.
The young rider from Leutkirch Germany managed to also hold his nerve also in the decisive second round in front of 4500 spectators. Following an exciting battle at the front of the pack between Girolami, Delepine and Lazzarini, Hiemer took control of his opponents. He let Simone Girolami take the front in the final stages and rode to a safe second to take overall championship victory in Latina and put himself into an unbeatable position for the S1 championship title.
“I’m so overjoyed that words fail me at the moment. I want to thank all those who supported me to get to the top. This title belongs to my entire team and my fantastic family,” the clearly emotionally moved Supermoto professional commented after the winner’s award ceremony.
The final two races of the Supermoto World Championship take place in Athens, Greece on Nov. 5, 2006.
