Ace Cafe London is hosting an exhibition of 100 years of road racing on the Isle of Man, entitled “The Isle of Man TT races – the first 100 years”. The free exhibition opens on 22nd April and runs until 28th May, the exact 100th anniversary of the first road race on the Island. At 10am on 28th May, in St Johns on the Isle of Man, 100 years after the first bikes pushed off, 100 bikes will take to the original course to celebrate the centenary.
The Isle of Man TT races can reasonably claim to be the origin of motorsport in the UK as the island originally hosted the UK trials for the fledgling European car racing championships as racing was banned in the UK. This became motorcycle racing in 1907.
The exhibition at Ace Cafe London will feature some of the legendary names from the TT races including Giacomo Agostini, Joey Dunlop, Mike ‘the bike’ Hailwood, last year’s Superbike and Senior winner John McGuinness and David Jeffries. The exhibition also has rarely seen images from the early years of racing, including shots of the start of the first ever TT in 1907.
The images were supplied by the ttfottofinders archive, and reknowned road racing photographers Steve Davison, author of ‘The Ragged Edge’ and Dave Collister from Isle of Man based photocycles.
Paul Phillips, Motorsport Manager, Department of Tourism and Leisure, Isle of Man, commented: “It’s very difficult to pick definitive images from a selection of literally millions but we think that the shots that we’ve selected reflect the passion, commitment and thrill or racing on the island as well as paying tribute to the legends that have raced there”.
Mark Wilsmore, Founder & MD of Ace Cafe London, commented: This is a real must for sport and photography fans and we are delighted to be able to host the pictures at the Ace”.
