The exciting and hotly contested Virgin Media Cup will be featuring high on the Nickel & Dime British MotoGP race card this coming weekend, 22 - 24 June, at Donington Park. Renowned for its youth development policy within motorcycle sport, the Virgin Media Cup has the rare opportunity for its talented young field to showcase its successes around the 2.5-mile circuit. If the first five rounds of the season are anything to go by, the expected sell-out crowd will be treated to some breathtaking action throughout the two 12-lap races.
Last year, eventual championship winner Tom Grant shared the spoils with Matthew Whitman. James Rose sucured a brace a podiums with a third and second in each race. Robbie Brown's season came to a premature end at the Leicestershire circuit on only the third lap of the second race. The 18-year old from Stoke-on-Trent suffered horrific injuries as a result of a terrifying crash and will be hoping for a more profitable outing this time round.
Championship leader, BJ Toal will be looking for a strong set of results ahead of the sixth round of the Virgin Media Cup the following weekend at Knockhill in Scotland. However, the blistering pace of James Webb and the experience of Midge Smart cannot be ignored in the hunt for honours.
James Webb: "It will amazing to be racing at the same event event as my brother Danny. MotoGP is the pinnacle of bike racing and everyone dreams of being the next Rossi. I can't wait to get out there to show everyone what an exciting Championship the Virgin Media Cup is."
Robbie Brown:"Racing at the MotoGP was going to be the highlight of my season, but instead it turned to disaster. I couldn't even bring myself to look at a bike for a few months after the crash. However, I'm back in the saddle and raring to go. It will be such an honour to line up on the grid this weekend."
Niall Mackenzie, Cup Mentor: "This weekend is a fantastic opportunity for the lads to showcase their obvious talents in front of the best riders in the world. They will all gain so much experience from the event that will hopefully spur them on to achieve even greater things once the Cup starts for real again the next weekend. Most of all they all need to enjoy what promises to be a smashing couple of races."
Free Practice and Qualifying sessions take place on Friday 22 June, with lights out on race one scheduled for 17:20 on Saturday. The weekend's action will climax with the second 12-lap Virgin Media Cup race at 16:45 on Sunday.
