After consultation with motorcycle manufacturer representatives, several leading teams and other interested parties, the organisers of this year's British Supermoto Championship have confirmed evolutionary changes for 2007. These changes will be written into the Championship Regulations which are scheduled to be available shortly. The changes do not affect the supporting 2007 NORA Sport National Supermoto Championship.
Previously, the Championship was to consist of one Open class with 28 riders plus up to 4 wildcards. The awards were to comprise; 2007 British Supermoto Champion, Runner Up and Third Place plus the winning Manufacturer's award.
The Championship will now feature two classes; up to 450cc and Open, although both classes will race simultaneously within the same grid of 28 leading riders plus up to 4 wildcards. The 2007 awards will therefore comprise of; 450cc 2007 British Supermoto Champion, Runner Up and Third Place, Open 2007 British Supermoto Champion, Runner Up and Third Place plus the associated winning Manufacturer's awards. Finally, a special award will be made to the Overall British Supermoto Champion (who will of course be either the 450cc or Open Class Champion as well) based on the final Championship points table.
The changes recognise both the growing profile of 450cc Supermoto racing and the importance of motorcycle industry support. The organisers firmly believe that by operating the two class system within a single race format, spectators, teams and riders alike will be able to enjoy action throughout the whole field as opposed to just at the front, as is often the case.
The seeding process for the 28 permanent riders who will take part in the 2007 British Championship has also been confirmed today. Riders will be seeded into the Championship by way of results achieved in a special Qualifying Day to be held at Three Sisters Circuit on Saturday 7th April, the day immediately prior to the first round of the 2007 series. A more in-depth article concerning the Qualification Day may be found on the Moto GB website, link below.
Although the proximity of the Qualifying Day to the first races equates to a considerable overnight workload for the organisers, the date was chosen in order to prevent additional travelling costs for all concerned. Riders competing in the 2007 NORA Sport National Championship are well catered for as there will also be extra un-timed practice sessions on Saturday 7th April in between the timed British Championship Qualifying Sessions.
The 2007 British Championship is targeted at top amateur, semi-professional and professional riders. The championship will be developed over the next few years to become the pinnacle of professional British Supermoto Racing. The NORA Sport National Championship is targeted at clubmen riders who wish to have a relaxed, enjoyable weekend whilst still enjoying highly competitive racing. The championship will continue to be developed to ensure that the fun and competition factor continues and that the competing costs are curbed wherever possible.
Teams and riders can now begin to formulate their plans for the forthcoming season, which begins in earnest over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend in April.
