Planet Knox has revised its entire range of Cold Killers with an emphasis on protecting riders from the potentially lethal effects of hypothermia. Hypothermia is a condition in which your normal body temperature of 37°C (98.6°F) drops below 35° (95°F). It’s usually caused by being in a cold environment, but is also possible in mild weather, for example, if you get soaked in a rain shower and do not dry off properly, particularly if there is also a cool wind. The water evaporating from your skin brings down your body temperature. At just 30 km/h (less than 20mph) the wind-chill effect can reduce the temperature by over 10°C, so it’s easy to understand how vulnerable motorcyclists are to this condition.
According to NHS Direct, the symptoms of moderate hypothermia include “inability to think or pay attention to events, confusion (some people don’t realise they are affected), fumbling hands, and drowsiness” any or all of which could have fatal consequences when trying to control a motorcycle.
Knox has given its Cold Killers range a distinctive new look for 2007 too. All items feature a new sculptured design that follows the contour of the body and every product now fits the wearer better and is more comfortable. Crucially the incredibly effective Cold Killers 3D+ fabric is retained and is now used on all products in the range. 3D+ is windproof and breathable, with a check-fleece on the inside that allows better air circulation, to prevent sweating. This is important because if you sweat on a cold day the moisture can accelerate hypothermia.
First to be released are the Sport Top and Pants, which are tailored for a more sculptured appearance that is enhanced by the silver/grey piping. There is a full length zipper on the left side, so the Sport Top is easy to put on and Knox has added a quarter length zip from the collar on the right side, so that the front section can be opened once the wearer arrives at a warm destination. The Sport Top II and matching Sport Pants sell for £49.99 and £39.99 respectively in sizes S – XXL.
