Germany’s Max Nagl sent a strong signal to the MX 1 competition in the opening pre-season race in Mantova, Italy when he finished the weekend top of the division’s overall standings. The races, held in the Northern Italian region of Lombardy were the first of three such events before the season gets underway at the beginning of April.

Nagl, who rides for KTM Sarholz, put in a winning performance with 5-1-2 results. His results may have been even more spectacular had he not crashed in the final lap of the opening moto to slide back to fifth.

After coming unstuck and finishing fifth in the first race, Nagl then rode to glory in the second race by taking an early lead and maintaining it until the finish line. In the third moto, Nagl took the holeshot but allowed David Philippaerts to steal the lead after he made a small mistake in the first turn. Nagl pushed hard to get back in the action but eventually had to concede victory to KTM factory rider Jonathan Barragan in the final moto.

Jonathan Barragan and fellow KTM factory rider David Philippaerts finished the weekend in creditable third and fourth overall places in MX1. The opening pre-season race was also satisfying for KTM’s MX2 factory riders Tyla Rattray and Tommy Searle, who wrapped up the action by finishing first and second in the overall MX2 standings.
