Make sure your bike doesn’t catch a cold this winter, by ensuring that it has the correct level and concentration of engine coolant. That’s the advice from lubricant specialists Q8Oils. According to the AA a 50:50 mix of antifreeze and water in the cooling system is needed in winter. This gives maximum protection down to -34° centigrade and without it severe engine damage costing hundreds of pounds can occur. While it may sound odd to raise the subject of coolant in winter, modern motorcycle coolants are designed for year-round use. They have a higher boiling point than water, for summer cooling, and a lower freezing point for winter protection. If the coolant has been diluted, perhaps by topping up with water over the summer, it may freeze during a cold spell of weather. Just like the effect of freezing on the pipes in your house, this has the potential to cause damage by bursting the radiator and hoses on your motorcycle.

Coolants also provide corrosion inhibition and have sludge prevention properties, so most original equipment manufacturers recommend changing standard life year-round coolants every two years, as the inhibitors lose their effectiveness over time.

Q8 Motorcycle Coolant is a high performance pre-mixed engine coolant, providing year round protection as a summer coolant and a winter antifreeze. Based on a 50:50 mix of Q8 ethylene glycol antifreeze concentrate and deionised water. The concentrate is chemically stable, corrosion inhibited and meets or exceeds the following specifications: BS 6580 and SAE J 1034. It is the same coolant that Airwaves Ducati has used in British Superbikes for the past three seasons.

Even so-called ‘lifelong’ coolants need replacing after five years, so draining and replacing coolant before riding through the winter, or putting your bike into hibernation, can be an inexpensive safeguard to keep it from freezing up as the temperature plummets.

Q8 Motorcycle Coolant is available in 1-litre bottles.
