For the first time in BSB history, the fifth round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship had to be cancelled today, due to extreme wet weather conditions at Mondello Park, Co Kildare, meaning Etchilhampton near Devizes in Wiltshire brothers Ollie and Tommy Bridewell were denied the opportunity to race their respective Vivaldi Suzukis.

The morning warm-up sessions were run but after a consultation between the MCRCB, team managers and the Mondello Park circuit management, it was decided to cancel the day’s proceedings.

BSB Race Director, Stuart Higgs made the following statement: “Due to the constant heavy rain we have been unable to prepare the circuit in a manner suitable for competition. We had warm up sessions for the Superbike, Supersport and Superstock classes and further reviewed the circuit for racing. At 2.00pm in consultation with the Mondello Park circuit and Dorna, a joint decision was made to cancel the event. The Superbike races will not be rescheduled. The 125cc race will be run at a double header at Mallory Park and a decision will be made in the next two to three days regarding the Superstock and Supersport races.”

Wayside Racing Team owner Marcus Bridewell commented: “In the end, there wasn’t a decision to make as it was simply too dangerous to race and I think the organisers had no choice but to abandon the meeting and I fully support the MCRCB’s decision.”

The next round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship takes place at Mallory Park, Leicestershire in two weeks’ time (3/4 June) but in the mean time, 17 year old Tommy will be in action at Silverstone next weekend when he contests the Suzuki GSXR Cup race as a wild card entry in the race that supports the European round of the World Superbike Championship.
