Round 6, the final round of the British Supermoto Championship and Round 9, the penultimate round of the National Supermoto Championship, both take place this coming weekend; the 22nd / 23rd September, at Silverstone Circuit near Towcester.
In the closely fought Open Class of the British Championship, Christian Iddon (Factory Aprilia SXV550) is mathematical favourite to clinch the title; needing just a 10th place or better in any one of the three races at Silverstone, to make his championship lead unassailable. A very consistent series of results have seen the High Peak rider finish in the top three of every one of the 15 races so far, with the exception of the final race at Teesside where a mechanical failure sidelined him prematurely.
Iddon’s consistency has resulted in him having the upper hand against fellow Grand Prix competitor and arch rival; Matt Winstanley (Robinsons of Rochdale KTM 610). Although Winstanley is also a frequent visitor to the winner’s step of the podium this year, a couple of crucial low position finishes at earlier rounds have conspired to make this year’s title an outside bet for the Wigan based rider. Other top riders including Sam Warren (SR Off-Road Aprilia SXV550), South African Craig Venske (Robinsons of Rochdale KTM 610) veteran ex-enduro rider Ady Smith (UK KTM 610) and David Hartley (Robinsons of Rochdale KTM 550) will all be keen to finish off their 2007 season in style and take advantage of any ‘championship finishes’ by the leading two riders.
In the hyper-competitive 450 Class of the British Championship, no less than 5 riders are still in with a chance of winning the title, although realistically one of the current leading three protagonists; Chris Hodgson (Robinsons of Rochdale KTM), Ricky Higgs (Aprilia UK SXV450) and Keith Farmer (SMRacing Rocket Centre Aprilia UK SXV450) is most likely to steal the crown at Silverstone.
George Clements (Honda 450) and Lee Jones (Buff Aprilia SXV450) however will be doing their best to change an outside chance, into victory. With three point scoring races on offer and a points system that is unforgiving of errors, all the riders will need to maintain focus to avoid tripping just before the final victory and the 2007 450 title chase is predicted to go down to the last lap of the last race.
