KTM rider Attilio Pignotti again capitalized on his rich experience as a rider to secure a fifth and third in the two motos at the Bulgarian Grand Prix in Pleven. He retains a slim two point lead in the championship standings.
The sixth round, run on the brand new Supermoto Circuit in Pleven, the first time Bulgaria has hosted a Supermoto World Championship event, was run under extremely hot conditions with shade temperatures reaching as high as 48º Celsius.
The Italian rider failed to get a good start in the first moto and was in eighth position in lap 1. By lap seven he had pushed his way up to fifth position and held on there all the way to the chequered flag. The second moto was more satisfactory and Pignotti settled down into fourth place in the first three laps. He moved into second position in the middle of the race, slipping back one position to finish third at the conclusion of the race.
"I am happy to be on the podium with third place and to still be in the lead in the championship standings," Pignotti said after the races. "Conditions were very tough because of the extreme heat. I also had some luck because Gerald Delepine had some difficulties in the second moto. He finished behind me in overall fourth so I was able to hold onto my lead in the championship." Pignotti has 232 championship points and Delepine has 229.
