Robbie Stewart is this year’s winner of the Dorna Academy Cup which rewards the Perthshire schoolboy racer’s determined performances with a career enhancing visit to the Red Bull MotoGP Academy in Spain.

Riding the KRP Honda in the highly competitive British 125GP Championship, the 15 year old from the Bridge of Earn has won four races outright, beating considerably more experienced riders, and this has taken him to the fore in the Academy Cup, which is designed to foster the development of talented young riders by giving them competition amid a professional environment.

The Academy Cup, which is backed by Dorna UK, the commercial rights holders of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship, is a race within a race, for riders aged between 14 and 16 years, in British 125GP action and Stewart has won the Cup category on six occasions.

He races for the final time in the British championship at Brands Hatch on Sunday 14 October, and then will enjoy the winner’s prize which is a weekend at the MotoGP Academy – funded by Dorna, the rights holders to World MotoGP, to develop upcoming young talent towards a career in Grand Prix racing.

“We have assessed Robbie’s performances throughout the season, also taking note of his preparations for races and the way that he conducts himself at the various rounds, and we have been most impressed,” said Tony Partis, the Managing Director of Dorna UK. “We believe that he has great potential for the future and this visit to the MotoGP Academy, which has helped produce current Grand Prix riders including our own Bradley Smith, can only be of benefit to him in his chosen career.”

The Red Bull MotoGP Academy is based in Barcelona, and operates under the expert guidance of former Grand Prix rider Alberto Puig.

Fantastic news for sure, though what does this win afford him? Is there a direct path to a GP 125 team, or is it a case that once they win, they are in the limelight and have to fight for a contract themselves? Superb effort whatever happens now, to go up against such sharp international talent and win. Well done Robbie, and best of luck taking this to the next level!
