All eyes were on Wayne Rainey as the American dominated the start of the 1989 500cc World Championship, but three-times title holder Eddie Lawson had a point to prove. Bike Grand Prix 1989 charts the dramatic battle between Rainey and Lawson, with stunning footage of the elbow-to-elbow duels that became a trademark of this classic year of racing. It is the latest volume of classic season reviews to be released for the first time on DVD by Duke Video.
While Lawson settled into his new Rothmans Honda team, Rainey’s consistency saw him quickly build up a dominant points position. It looked like it was going to be the Lucky Strike Yamaha rider’s year, but ‘Steady Eddie’ battled his way back.
A dramatic crash for Rainey in Sweden made sure the title wouldn’t be decided until the last of the 15 rounds, and it was Lawson who snatched the crown to secure his status as one of the greatest of all time.
Bike Grand Prix 1989 features action from every round, as Lawson, Rainey and Kevin Schwantz dominate, detailing the titanic battles between this trio for supremacy.
It charts a heart-breaking year for Schwantz who, through a mix of mistakes and mechanical woes, couldn’t convert his six wins – the most of any rider in 1989 – into a title challenge. But the hard-fighting Texan couldn’t be broken and ended the year on a high.
The year was one to forget for Australian Wayne Gardner who, after securing victory at his home race was put out of action for most of the season by a bone-breaking spill in the US.
Bike Grand Prix 1989 features all the memorable moments of unforgettable year – Mick Doohan’s debut season in 500cc racing, Brit Niall Mackenzie’s stunning ride at his home race, the controversy-hit Italian round, which saw leading riders refuse to take part on safety grounds, and former champion Freddie Spencer’s wretched return from retirement.
As well as breath-taking racing action, this 103 minute DVD includes interviews with the top riders, offering a fascinating insight into the title race and off-track controversies.
