While their 250cc Red Bull KTM team-mates celebrated a victory on the Motegi Racing Circuit, KTM's three-rider line-up in the 125 cc class experienced a difficult day and left the Japanese Grand Prix disappointed
Tomoyoshi Koyama, who had been very fast in training and had wanted to do well on his home circuit, experienced tyre grip problems and was only able to finish 14th. Conditions were made more difficult because of changing weather conditions, leaving the track wet at some stages and drying out in other.
Koyama said he had been sliding badly in the left hand corners, a problem he experienced right from the first lap. "It was so bad that I even thought of pulling in, but then many other riders crashed, so I decided to continue and at least try to take a couple of points," a disappointed Koyama said after the race.
Team-mate Randy Krummenacher fared no better, experienced chattering problems, and young Steve Bonsey, who looked like he was going to put in his best ever Grand Prix crashed out after holding eleventh place.
"I had the same problem that slowed us in the dry practice yesterday, a strange chatter on the front under heavy braking. I kept missing the apex of the corners, and got out of the corners really badly," Krummenacher said after the race.
Bonsey got away well and worked his way up to Koyama before he noticed some sliding on the rear tyre. "Then I had a highsider and saved it. I took a deep breath, but soon after, the bike went sideways once again and spat me off!"
