Newly crowned Virgin Mobile Cup Champion Tom Grant calmed his nerves, took a deep breath and climbed on board his new bike for the 2007 season a 210 Bhp Virgin Mobile Yamaha R1! The Virgin Mobile Cup is an amazing youth development academy with a totally unique prize of a contract in the premier Supebike class, there is only one contract to win but this series has unearthed some of the finest new talent in the British Championships.
Tom the fourth winner has not stopped pinching himself since he won the Cup and lines up alongside Tommy Hill in the highest profile Superbike team in the series.
Mallory Park in Leicestershire was the venue, and to add to Tom's nerves the heavens opened and soaked the circuit, his very first ride was to be on wet tyres! Conscious of the conditions and the pressure of Rob Mac and his team looking on, Tom eased into his rhythm gaining confidence with every lap and enjoying every minute of track time.
Eventually the track dried and Tom got to ride with slick tyres and feel the full power of the bike, with every lap his confidence grew and by the end of the test he could not stop smiling.
"This is all a totally mind blowing experience, since winning the Virgin Mobile Cup I have been so excited about riding the bike and meeting my new team, I can't explain how I felt driving here today it's like the most amazing Xmas surprise morning! Rob and the team are great and really made me feel part their family, the bike is awesome and just want to ride tomorrow please" Grinning Tom Grant
"We all know what Tom is going through today, it is probably the most nervous / exciting day of his life and at 18 yrs old he is the youngest Superbike rider in the series, for all my team and partners this is a very satisfying day after a roller coaster year in the Virgin Mobile Cup!
Tom could not have had a worse day to climb onto the Superbike, patchy damp track and a lot of other bikes around, I spent most of the day out on the circuit watching and he looked very confident, we have a worthy winner and we are al looking forward to seeing how far he can go." Rob Mac
