A Royal Navy sailor, of north London, was banned from driving for 56 days today for travelling 155mph on a dual carriageway.

Matthew Whitehead, 21, of Ellington Street, Holloway, appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court having pleaded guilty by post to the offence of speeding.

The court was told that Whitehead, who serves aboard the warship HMS Marlborough, was spotted by police travelling at 155.5mph on a Suzuki GSXR 750cc motorcycle, on the A3(M) dual carriageway motorway at Horndean, Hampshire, on August 30, 2004.

District Judge Roger Ede sentenced Whitehead, who already had three points on his licence, to a driving disqualification for 56 days with a fine of £175. He was also ordered to pay £35 court costs.

He told Whitehead: "I have taken into account your plea of guilty.

"There has to be a disqualification because it's 85mph over the limit - it must be one of the highest speeds I have had to deal with."

Speaking after the short hearing, Whitehead said: "I was late getting back, we were going to be deployed."

Last month Pc Mark Milton, 38, from Telford, Shropshire, was cleared of speeding and dangerous driving after he was recorded travelling at 159mph on the M54 in 2003.

District Judge Bruce Morgan at Ludlow Magistrates' Court acquitted Pc Milton because he was trained in advanced driving and said he was familiarising himself with his new patrol car.
