The THINK! Motorcycle Academy enjoyed a hugely successful debut appearance at the 2007 International Motorcycle and Scooter Show, which came to a close on Sunday night at the NEC in Birmingham. The Academy, which is designed to promote the government’s road safety message and encourage riders to ‘Give their bike the skills it deserves’, scooped the award for ‘Best Trade Stand’ while attracting tens of thousands of visitors during the ten-day event.
Replicating its activities during the 2007 Bennetts British Superbike Championship, the THINK! Motorcycle Academy featured interviews with top motorcycle racers, industry experts and Bikesafe officers. Daily appearances from triple BSB Champions John Reynolds and Niall Mackenzie were backed up by MotoGP star Colin Edwards and a host of BSB riders including Leon Haslam, Tom Sykes, Leon Camier and Michael Laverty.
Visitors to the stand were able to put their own riding skills to the test by riding the Honda Riding Trainer, while Bikesafe officers were on hand to give riding tutorials and aim interested fans towards advanced training courses.
John Reynolds, THINK! Ambassador and three times British Superbike Champion, commented: “Not all show visitors go to British Superbikes and vice versa, so it was great to get the THINK! message over to a different audience. Through the ‘BSB Hospitality competition’ 20 lucky winners will be treated like a VIP during what promises to be an awesome 2008 race season.”
THINK! also used its stand as a platform for the Department for Transport’s new Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (SHARP), which provides an independent test of safety helmet protection from impact protection, rating helmets from 1 to 5 stars dependent on the results. Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick officially announced the launch of the scheme at the Road Safety Expo on 22nd November.
Research has shown that up to 50 motorcyclists’ lives could be saved every year if everyone wore a helmet that scores highly in the SHARP assessment. The first rating will be available from Spring 2008 and further details on the scheme can be found at
