MV Agusta now occupy second and third position in the ultra competitive FIM Superstock 1000 Championship, with less than 20 points separating the first and third placed riders. With only four more races to go, the small Varese-based factory is challenging Suzuki for the Championship with its newly released F4 1000R, while leading the might of Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha by a comfortable margin (4th placed Claudio Corti is on 65 points, trailing MV’s Skassa in third on 96).
Ironically MV might have been leading the series had it not been for a mistake during the last lap by MV-mounted Ayrton Badovini (Biassono Unionbike - MV Agusta), which was pounced on by Luca Skassa (EVR Corse Ormeni Racing – MV Agusta) to secure his first win in the Superstock category. Championship leader Alessandro Polita (Celani Suzuki Italia) was always in contention but looked as if he’d have to settle for third until the final corners, when he capitalised on Badovini’s misfortune to score second, and secure his championship lead.
MV gave the F4 1000 the 'R' treatment, revising the cylinder head and inlet tracts and fitting Weber Marelli 5SM Fuel Injection to boost power from 166 to 174bhp. The brakes, chassis and suspension have also undergone a performance-orientated upgrade, including Brembo P4/34 radial callipers with 320mm discs, forged aluminium Brembo super-light wheels and Marzocchi R.A.C 50mm titanium nitride forks all fitted as standard.
Three Cross Motorcycles, who distribute MV Agusta in the UK, have reported significant interest in the new F4 1000R not only from road riders but also teams looking to compete in the UK National Superstock Championship, who recognise that it is not just a stunningly beautiful bike but also competitive to race straight from the crate. Priced at £14,250 the F4 1000R Mono exudes character, sporting spirit and quality. All eyes are on MV for the next round at Assen on 3rd September.
