The Michelin factory in Dundee is set to become the first manufacturing site in the UK to make tyres using energy created from fresh air. Construction work is now well under way on two state of the art wind turbines, which are due to start producing electricity to power the factory in the coming few days.
The introduction of wind turbines is seen as a positive step forward, bringing both environmental and cost benefits to the site, in an innovative way. As a result of using wind power, less fossil fuels will be burnt in power stations to supply the factory. The MWh generated by the turbines will reduce power station emissions by more than 7,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
The Michelin factory in Dundee opened in 1972, and today employs more than 950 people. It is the only car tyre manufacturing plant in Scotland, and produces more than seven million car tyres a year.
