Mike Hailwood is a legend in motorcycle racing and now you can hear the story of his successfrom the man himself. In 1968 Mike the Bike sat down with Peter Arnold to chat about a decade of racing at the Isle of Man TT, and Duke is delighted to announce the fascinating result is now available for the first time on CD. In this extraordinary recording, Hailwood re-lives the highs and lows, from his first appearance as a fresh-faced teenager to his apparent retirement from two-wheel racing at the end of 1967.
Chatting at his London flat, Hailwood recalls the exhilarating battles, frustrations and tremendoustriumphs of what proved to be the firstinstalment of his TT career. It is a thrilling opportunity to discover how Hailwood managed to stamp his authority on the event, and it gives a revealing insight into some of the most memorable races ever.
Find out which event Hailwood labelled ‘probably the worst race I’ve ever had’, which section he felt ‘hopeless’ on and why the Mountain Road proved such a challenge, ‘after all these years I can still never remember which corner I’m at’ he admits.
My First Ten TT Years gives Hailwood’s first-hand accounts of each of the 12 wins he scored in that first decade, including the extraordinary trebles he scored in 1961 and 1967, and the unprecedented back-to-back Senior TT wins he recorded from 1963 to 1967. He openly discusseshis true feelings about the iconic TT circuit, his dices with legends of the sports including Giacomo Agostini and Bob McIntyre, and what he really thought about the machines he tackled the fabled 37¾-mile circuit on – including one he colourfully dubs ‘a camel’!
The soundtrack is provided by the Hondas, MV Agustas and other glorious machines that dominated the TT during Hailwood’s heyday, plus race commentary from such luminaries as Murray Walker.
Hailwood returned to the Isle of Man 10 years after this recording, and secured two more TT winsbefore ending his amazing TT career.
