The annual Bonhams sale in Harrogate, now in its 11th year, is the largest combined collectors' car and motorcycle sale in the north of England, and this year was the biggest and best yet. 95% of the 400 lots sold, with many prices exceeding pre-sale estimates, and realising a sale total of just under £500,000. The sale always attracts a large crowd and this year the saleroom was packed out with a record number of registered bidders.
Top price of £29,325 was achieved for a wonderfully original 1938 Brough Superior 982cc SS80 & Blacknell Sidecar (estimate £16,000 - 20,000) that had been owned by the same family from new. The vendor was delighted with the result which softened the blow of parting with such an old family friend.
The private collection of George H Fearn from Derbyshire featuring 20 vehicles was 100% sold, with lots ranging from a 1920 Sun Gents Bicycle (£127) to a 1951 MG TD 1 (£10,695). Motorcycles in the collection included a 1921 ABC 400cc (£4,830) and a 1960 BSA 646cc A10 Super Rocket (£2,990), and cars varied from a 1927 Morris Cowley 11.9hp Two Seater and Dickey (£7,820) to a 2005 Volkswagen Bora Highline Tdi 130 Saloon (£10,350).
Other highlights of the Bonhams' sale included:* 1932 Lagonda 2-Litre Continental Saloon, a barn discovery that sold for £18,630
* 1957 Bentley S1 Saloon that has been in the same family since 1957 - £17,480
* 1960 Jaguar Mark II 3.4 litre Saloon - one owner from new who bought the car after a life-changing pools win in 1960 - sold £14,490
* 1995 Honda RVF 750 Type RC 45 - an emerging classic sold above estimate for £14,950
The automobilia also sold well with a scratch-built model of the steam vessel 'Louie' selling for £1,840, and 'Dolly', a Classic Two-Seater Inboard-Engine Runabout doubling the pre-sale estimate at £3,220. An unusual aviator's desk clock estimated at £200 - 250 realised £1,955 and a pair of Phare Ducellier headlamps sold for double the estimate at £2,070.
