Chas Mortimer, one of Britain's foremost Grand Prix contenders of the 1970s, is a name that is synonymous with great motorcycle racing. He has accumulated a succession of trophies over the years, and Bonhams will sell his collection at The Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show in Stafford on 22 October 2006.
The Mortimer Trophy Collection includes no fewer than 29 Isle of Man TT Silver Replicas; three FIM medals for his World Championship placings in 1972, 1973 and 1976; four Manx Grand Prix awards; and 18 World Championship event trophies. In addition, there are countless competitors and finishers plaques; 15 trophies gained at major international meetings; 14 national awards and other more minor mementoes.
Ben Walker, Bonhams' Motorcycle specialist, says: "Trophy collections representing the entire competition career of important racing motorcyclists are rarely offered for sale, and I'm delighted that Bonhams is able to afford collectors' the opportunity of bidding on such a great selection of awards."
Son of famous Brooklands star, Charles Mortimer Senior, 'Chas' Mortimer was born in London in 1949 and began to make his mark in national races in the mid-1960s. He raced machines of all kinds but his greatest successes were gained aboard 125cc Yamahas in 1972 and 1973 when he finished third and second respectively in the World Championship. Again Yamaha mounted, he finished third in the 350cc World Championship in 1976.
Chas Mortimer won seven Grands Prix in total, including four Isle of Man TTs when those races counted towards the World Championship, as well as a further three TTs in non-Championship classes. Among British riders, only Rod Gould and the late, great Barry Sheene won more GPs in the 1970s than Chas.
