After a superb 2006 season, featuring some dramatic action across the length and breadth of Great Britain, this weekend sees the finale of the Moto GB British Supermotard Championship at Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk. Although Sam Warren (Aprilia UK) has already clinched the Overall Moto GB British Supermotard Championship, all the individual class titles are up for grabs at Snetterton and riders in their respective classes will be battling hammer and tong in their personal bids for glory.
SM1: The battle, Sam Warren (Aprilia UK) is the favourite for the title, needing only 1 point from the weekend’s action to clinch the big class honours ahead of Ady Smith (KTM UK). With Christian Iddon (Aprilia UK) away at the German Grand Prix this weekend, Andy Mitchell (DCR Husaberg UK) or Keith Farmer (Wulfsport SMR Husaberg), are strong contenders for 3rd overall. If Warren does claim the SM1 class as well as the Overall title, it will have been the ultimate dream debut for the Belper based rider in his first season with Aprilia UK and no doubt the whole of the UK based Aprilia team.
SM2:Ricky Higgs is the strong favourite needing an unlikely 2 DNF’s to lose the title to either of the flying foreigners; Mickael Zammit (MW Racing Honda) or Jochen Jasinski (Moto Supplies Husqvarna). James Addy (Appleyard KTM) has fully recovered from his mid-season motocross injury and is an outside contender for 3rd overall.
SM3:SM3 is perhaps the closest fought over title with nothing to pick between Raoul Spangenberg (Kawasaki) or Colin Spink (Suzuki). Ironically whichever of the two riders wins, it will be a historic victory as neither Suzuki or Kawasaki have ever claimed a British Supermotard Championship title before, despite several years of making eligible bikes.
Last but not least is the popular Challenge class; Scott Woodacre (Aprilia) is looking like the champion elect after his season long rival Kevin Ridley (KTM) suffered a DNF with a puncture at Pembrey, which has handed the Leigh based youngster a definite points advantage going into the last round.
Round 6 of the Moto GB British Supermotard Championship takes place on September 10th and features practice / qualifying from 10.00am with the now traditional Supermoto ‘bar to bar’ race action from approx midday. Snetterton circuit is 10 miles north-east of Thetford on the A11 from London to Norwich. Coming from the south, leave the M11 at junction 9 and follow the A11. From the north or west, use the M11/A11 and join the A11 after Newmarket. The circuit layout has had subtle evolutionary changes applied since a Maxxis UK Supermoto Championship round was held there in May 2004 and promises a demanding layout for riders with some high speed tarmac corners and a technical off-road section.
Highlights of the Snetterton race will be shown on Motors TV at 8.30pm on Friday 22nd September.
Spectator admission costs £10 in advance or £12 at the gate.
