The countdown to one of the most exciting weekends in the motorcycle racing calendar is on, and this year BMW Motorrad UK will be part of the action. The British round of the MotoGP World Championship will take place at Donington Park from 30 June, with race day on Sunday 3 July. BMW will be there to present and promote its exciting range of sports models.

The past two years have seen BMW Motorrad introduce an impressive range of sports bikes to suit a wide range of riders. In 2004, BMW launched its most powerful sports bike to date, the K1200 S. The 167 hp four-cylinder bike has been hailed as a true superbike, yet is surprisingly usable for everyday riding, whether for Sunday morning ride-outs or continent crossing. For this reason, the K1200 S won the coveted MCN Best Sports Tourer award last year.

Hot on the heels of the K1200 S, came the dynamic K1200 R – the most powerful naked production bike in the world. Equipped with the same formidable engine as the S model, the aggressively styled 163 hp roadster delivers incredible levels of performance, with excellent road holding and handling. The K1200 R is the epitome of BMW’s new direction and sportier focus.

This sporting focus has continued into 2006 with the launch of the F800 S – BMW’s first ever parallel-twin sports middleweight machine, and the 122 hp R1200 S – BMW’s most powerful sports boxer ever.

The new generation engine at the heart of the F800 S produces an impressive 85 hp and a punchy 63lb/ft of torque. Combine this with a new suspension system, maintenance-free belt drive and a light and responsive chassis, and you have a seriously fun bike for any type of rider.

The powerful R1200 S has been developed as a true road sports bike and its torque-rich boxer engine provides exhilarating performance for quick riding – on road or racetrack. But where this bike differs from race replica machines is its focus on real world riding, where advanced ergonomics, long-distance comfort, increased fuel range and maintenance-free shaft drive make it a much more practical consideration than a pure supersports machine.

Visitors to the 2006 MotoGP will be able to see all four models on display, with BMW Motorrad experts on hand to talk through the many benefits of these great sports bikes. Also at Donington Park will be a display of enduro motorcycles including the R1200 GS Adventure, the HP2 Enduro and an F650 GS Dakar rally bike – as ridden by the BMW Race to Dakar team in the 2006 Euromilhões Lisbon to Dakar.

BMW has been involved with the MotoGP for the past seven years as the sole supplier of a range of exclusive safety cars for the championship. Riders are escorted by a powerful and stylish BMW fleet including the 507 bhp M5 and M6 models. For further information on the 2006 MotoGP Championship, enthusiasts can visit www.motogp.com.

Riders interested in the K1200 S can currently participate in BMW Motorrad’s ‘Let the all-day test ride decide’ promotion, running at all BMW dealerships until 31 August. The K1200 R and the K1200 S are part of the Sizzling Summer deposit contribution offer.
