Fabien Foret (GIL Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R) secured the ninth best time at the two-day official Vallelunga tests, just holding off his team-mate Pere Riba (GIL Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R) in the final analysis of lap times. Each rider put in a significant degree of work at this new circuit, matching the best efforts of the team, but as yet the stopwatches have not demonstrated the true abilities of both men and machines. The high track temperatures and schizophrenic nature of the new 4.110km track - fast and flowing to start and almost impossibly tight and twisty to finish - merely complicated matters, especially when concentrating on choosing tyres and race set-ups for a race to be held in the much cooler conditions of late September.
Foret’s best time of 1’40.837 was set in the morning of day two, with Riba’s best of 1’40.951 coming in the final session.
Both riders have already tested at the venue for the next round of the championship chase, Brno, which takes place on July 22.
Fabien Foret: “The test has been challenging. We have struggled with the settings on the bike and we did not make all the progress we hoped for. The problem is that the bike is hard to turn and it is also hard for me to hold a line around the long corners, so my times are not as good as we all want. Anyway, we must keep working on the settings and now we must sit down and analyse the data. I’m sure we can fix things. Also, when we race here, I’m sure the conditions will be quite different.”
Pere Riba: “Most of the test has been spent trying different geometries and different suspension settings. It is the first time at this track for me and it is OK. We have worked a lot with the tyres but I don’t know if we will be able to use the ones we have here, because the track temperature will be a lot lower come the race.”
