Today, as most will know is the National Motorcycle Week’s Ride 2 Work day and is designed to encourage motorcycle and scooter owners to ride to work, and if they can, take a friend, colleague or family member with them. This week’s worth of events is setup and organised by the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA). The aim of the day is to highlight that motorcycling cuts congestion, pollution, and journey times and is convenient and flexible.

At the press photo shoot based at the Ace Café, today there were a number of riders which were participating in the National Motorcycle Week’s Ride 2 Work event. These riders included two Metropolitan Police Motorcycle Tasking Team (Bike Safe) officers; Keith Johnson, and Brady Woodnick.

“The day is planned to be a great success with a few more riders being out on the road, we both feel that the Ride 2 Work day does make car drivers more aware of motorcyclists”

Both officers were on motorcycles provided by Kawasaki UK, and attended the photo shoot to increase awareness and represent the Metropolitan Police Motorcycle Tasking Team.

All of the riders who were in attendance made their presence well known by wearing hi-vis florescent jackets with the ‘Now’s The Time’ logo and slogans such as ‘Stuck in another Jam?’, ‘Fed up of Traffic?’, ‘Wish you had a bike?’ and ‘I’ll be home before you!’

The jackets were intended to make the riders visible while on the road, but also to make drivers think about the effects of driving opposed to riding a motorcycle.

This year the National Motorcycle Week is based around the theme of ‘Now’s the Time’, which is a campaign setup by the MCIA to encourage drivers to leave their cars and join the Motorcycling Community!

The key aims are:

  • Get on two wheels
  • Lose the L plates
  • Do something different
  • Take a friend for a ride
  • Watch a race
  • Go off-road
  • Hold an event
  • Ride to Work

Car Drivers are Jealous of Motorcyclists

Research recently carried out proved that one in five car drivers are actually jealous of motorcycle and scooter riders. The research commissioned by the MCIA revealed that one in six Brits spend the equivalent of an entire working day travelling to and from work in the course of one week, totaling to nearly two years of solid commuting over an average working life.

Motorcycle Facts

In the UK, there are approximately 3.5 million people who have motorcycle entitlement on their licence. There are around 1.5 million active riders and 15% of these are women.

The ‘average’ motorcyclist rides 90 miles per week, with about 60% of journeys are for work, business or education. Up to five motorcycles can park in the space occupied by one car. Scooters cut journey times in the capital by an average of 48% compared to all other forms of transport.

Why not grab your helmet, and take a friend or colleague for a quick spin!
