For the first time ever, Supermoto riders will race competitively at England’s best known and largest motor sport venue on the occasion of the Masters Cup meeting on Sunday the 24th of September. Although the meeting is not a round of any championship, the organising club have received a very healthy advance entry underlining the continual increasing interest in UK Supermoto. Silverstone is expected to appear in the Moto GB Championship calendar in 2007, especially as thanks to its permission to host 24 hour endurance car race meetings, it offers the possibility of night time Supermoto racing under floodlights – without a noise problem!
The action packed Masters Cup meeting sees several concurrent competitions scheduled to be held at the popular Northamptonshire venue. The first is the main event; the inaugural Moto GB inter-club competition which will be run on similar lines to the Supermoto Des Nations events albeit with much bigger teams! A cleverly thought out points scoring system means that despite the presence of many star riders in the higher groups, club riders of lesser ability in the lower groups are just as important to each team’s overall chances of victory. The racing is split into 2 motos for each of the 5 groups (determined by previous timed qualifying sessions) and is scored; 0 points for a win, 1 point for 2nd place, 2 points for 3rd etc in each group. Bonus points (minus bonus points of course!) will also be awarded on a sliding scale for smaller capacity bikes, so a 125cc bike winning a lower group race could easily be the hero of the hour as each team strives for the lowest overall score in order to win the event.
As if that were not exciting enough, the Masters Cup Trophies (1 x 450cc and 1 x Open Class) will be awarded to the riders who claim the lowest aggregate score in the A group across the two motos in their respective capacity classes. The competition for these prestigious trophies is sure to be very fierce as top entries to date include; Grand Prix rider Christian Iddon (Factory Aprilia), 2006 Moto GB Champion Sam Warren (Aprilia UK) pictured above, reigning double NORA Sport Champion Andy Mitchell (DCR Husaberg), James Addy (Appleyard KTM), Lee Jones (DCR Husaberg), George Clements (TRM Honda), Rob McNealy (Husqvarna UK), Nigel Scott (SMR Aprilia) plus a large supporting cast of extremely enthusiastic club level riders.
In addition to the solos, the day sees supporting trophy races for Supermoto Quads and the very entertaining Superlites all of whom are keen to impress at the latest Moto GB Supermoto venue.
As a final bonus, whilst the Supermoto riders make their debut on the specially prepared infield Stowe circuit, it will also be possible to catch some of the Formula 3 and British GT Car racing which will be going on at the same time around the outside!
