The Red Bull KTM 250 duo of Finland’s Mika Kallio and Hiroshi Aoyama of Japan were both forced to leave the Mugello racing circuit empty-handed and disappointed after a string of bad luck in the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Mika Kallio got away well and was working himself into an excellent position in the early stages of the race when he fell victim to Jorge Lorenzo’s furious hunt to recover positions from his fifth row start. The world championship leader was making an unrelenting charge from the back of the pack when he hit Kallio from behind and forced him to retire with a broken left exhaust pipe after just three laps of the race.

“I had a good start and was in sixth position after one lap. But in the last corner of the second lap, Lorenzo hit me from behind and broke my left exhaust pipe,” a disappointed Kallio said. “It’s a pity, because I would have had a good race for sure!”

The team’s Japanese rider Aoyama was also going strongly in a four-man battle in the group directly behind the leaders when his engine slowed, causing him to incrementally drop back to an eventual twenty first place.

“I was in a good battle in the second group,” Aoyama said “ I had already managed to get ahead of my brother Shuhei and his Honda team-mate Julian Simon, when my engine slowed and I dropped back. I am very disappointed!”
