As the countdown to a brand new Grand Prix motorcycle racing season fast approaches, it has been announced that BMW is to continue its support for this exciting sport by confirming its status as official safety car supplier for the MotoGP World Championship series until 2009. For the past seven years, BMW has enjoyed a collaborative agreement in being the sole manufacturer responsible for providing a range of exclusive safety cars throughout each MotoGP season. And now this support is set to continue throughout the 17-round 2006 series and beyond.

Starting on 26 March at the Jerez circuit in southern Spain, riders will be escorted by a powerful and stylish BMW fleet including the 507 bhp M5 and M6 models. Furthermore, a BMW Z4 M Coupé awaits the lucky rider who manages to accrue the lowest combined qualifying time for the entire 2006 season. American rider Colin Edwards is already celebrating after winning the exclusive ‘BMW M Award’ at the official MotoGP test session held at the Catalunya circuit in Spain. Colin raced past the likes of current reigning champion, Valentino Rossi, to become the fastest rider at the test event and walk away with a set of keys to a brand new BMW Z4 M Roadster.

Upon being presented with the keys to his new BMW, a clearly delighted Edwards said: “I think this is the kick-start I need for the season. It’s my first time riding the same bike in two consecutive seasons; we’ve been going well and hope to have a good year.” Holding up the keys, he added: “and now all the hard work seems to be paying off.”
