Maria Costello, fastest lady around the Isle of Man TT circuit, is to become an Ambassador for the RideSafe BackSafe initiative in the North West region. The initiative is run by the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety and Lancashire Constabulary and is also supported by Greater Manchester Police, together with motoring organisations such as IAM, MAG and BMF.
Maria is preparing for the Isle of Man Manx GP in August, but in between races she likes to put something back into biking, Maria explains...
"Being an ambassador for RideSafe BackSafe is an important role for me and I’m delighted that I have the opportunity to put something back in to biking. The initiative is all about safe riding and RideSafe BackSafe supports that by emphasising the improvement of riding skills through training and the need to wear the best protective clothing you can afford to buy. I’m especially keen to support and meet young riders who could gain from this initiative as they are the least experienced and most vulnerable road users."
"Not all bikers get to race motorcycles, but we all enjoy the thrill of being on two wheels just the same. The differences are that bikers meet far more hazards and more risks riding on the public highways than I do competing on a circuit or in a controlled environment, I don’t have traffic coming from all directions and poor road surfaces to deal with when I’m racing. But we do share similarities, both racers and road riders need to practice new skills to improve our riding ability and wearing the proper kit is essential for us all."
Communications Manager at the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety, Linda Sanderson, explains the benefit of Maria’s involvement...
"Maria is fast, gorgeous and, above all, a very competent and experienced motorcycle rider. If her support encourages bikers in the North West region to hear and take on board our simple but potentially life-saving messages, that has to be a good thing"
