The opening round of the Maxxis British Motocross Championship will be staged on the full Grand Prix course at Donington Park on Sunday 9 March.
It will be the first time that a round of the country’s premier series has been staged at the Leicestershire circuit that last year won ride acclaim as it successfully held the British Motocross Grand Prix on a specially constructed, highly demanding course.
It is a course that will provide the challenges for the reigning champions as they race with the prized ‘Number one’ plates for the first time. Billy Mackenzie will be keen to enjoy a positive start to his MX1 campaign and his CAS Honda team-mate Mike Brown will be aiming for a winning start to the MX2 category.
The competition is expected to be intense with many of the contenders for World title honours taking part in the high leaping, slip-sliding action on the course that will stage this year’s Motocross of Nations over the weekend on 27-28 September.
“We are delighted to have this opportunity of staging the opening round of the British series in what is shaping up to be one of the biggest and best seasons ever,” reflected Donington Park’s Events and Operations Director Robert Fearnall.
“The entry, we expect, will contain the big names of not only domestic action, but also Internationally, and it will provide a first opportunity to see many of them in action for the first time this year in the UK.”
This new event fully complements a busy calendar of events on two wheels that also includes the British Motorcycle Grand Prix (June 20-22) and the European round of the World Superbike Championship (September 5-7) together with the fourth round of the British Superbike Championship (May 24-26).
