The fifth round of the British 125GP Championship at Mondello Park had to be cancelled due to persistent, heavy rain making the race track unsafe to race on. Michael Hill and his TABOO Motorsport team were disappointed at not being able to race as they had made progress over the weekend and had hoped to score more points.
“It’s been a tough weekend and a bit of an anti climax not being able to race. I guess we can only look on the positives that have come out of our trip to Ireland,” said Hill, “I set another personal best lap time, and felt I could have had another top twenty finish.”
During first free practice in the dry Hill was running in seventeenth, however when the wet weather kicked in for second free practice he was up to ninth, showing his wet weather prowess.
Encouraged by this top ten placing Hill was looking forward to qualifying but that is when the mechanical gremlins kicked in and suspension problems took over. “First qualifying didn’t go well as we had suspension problems and I struggled to find a good rhythm. I was trying too hard running into corners too deep,” sighed Hill, “Session two was better and I moved up to twenty third. I then got some clear track for my final flying lap only to mess it up! So I finally qualified in twenty seventh.”
Despite the low qualification Hill was confident of a point scoring finish, “I was looking forward to a dry race as my times were capable of another strong finish in the points. With the weather being so bad there wasn’t a chance of racing. The organisers did the right thing as rider safety has to come first,” concluded Hill.
The fifth and sixth rounds of the British 125GP Championship will now take place at Mallory Park on the 2nd – 4th June.
