Airwaves Ducati consolidated their lead in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship with four podium finishes in baking sunshine at Mallory Park. Leon Haslam showed consistent form with two 2nd places, while Gregorio Lavilla continued his run of podium finishes in every race with a 3rd and a win.
In spite of qualifying in pole position, Lavilla had a poor start that was further confounded when the safety car was brought onto the track after an accident at the start, leaving Haslam 5th and Lavilla 6th after 4 laps. Following a number of incidents and some supreme overtaking manoeuvres on their Ducati 999F06 machines, Haslam was in 3rd and Lavilla in 4th at the end of lap 16. When the young Red Bull Honda rider, Jonathan Rea, crashed in front of Haslam, the Airwaves Ducati riders moved up to 2nd and 3rd, with Leon narrowing the gap on the race leader. However, Kiyonari was back on form and the HM Plant Honda rider’s 1.9-second lead was too much to overcome, resulting in 2nd for Haslam and 3rd for Lavilla.
Both Haslam and Lavilla had much better starts in the second race, moving into 2nd and 3rd place respectively. On lap 2 Lavilla overtook his teammate and began his pursuit of Kiyonari’s lead. With a new chicane added, lap records were there to be set and on lap 4 Gregorio Lavilla recorded the fastest lap of 55.982. He quickly moved into 1st place, followed into 2nd by Haslam.
The 1.41-mile Leicestershire circuit is notoriously physical and challenging for both man and machine and Q8Oils have once again provided lubrication under scorching conditions to help in what Team Manager Colin Wright described as “An incredible weekend for Airwaves Ducati!” To recap, that’s Pole Position, Four podium finishes and a new lap record!
