Talented young British riders will again be given a career boost in a joint initiative between the Motorcycle Circuit Racing Control Board and Dorna, the commercial rights holders of both the Bennetts British Superbike Championship and the World MotoGP Championship. The Dorna Academy Cup is a race within the main British 125GP Championship and is held at each round of the country’s premier motor sport series, the British Superbike Championship.

It continues for a third year with the aim of providing young, upcoming riders in the age group of 14 to 16 years (the maximum age being 16 years of 1st April 2007) with the opportunity to race in a highly professional environment, gaining major public exposure as they develop their racing skills.

At each round of the championship the performance of the riders eligible for the Cup points will be assessed with an end of season award, designed to foster the career of the individual, towards graduation into World Championship racing, being made by Dorna.

This year’s winner will receive an all expenses paid weekend in Spain with the Red Bull MotoGP Academy – in previous years, this has helped in the development of riders including Bradley Smith and Danny Webb, who are both racing in this year’s World 125cc Grand Prix championship.

“We have a wealth of talent in this country and see the need to help foster the careers of young riders, developing their race skills, and easing them towards their goal of riding in Grand Prix,” commented Tony Partis, the Managing Director of Dorna UK Limited. “The Academy has been very successful in recent years in the graduation of our teenagers into the top flight, and I am certain that we shall see this continue.”

The opening round of the Dorna Academy Cup is on Easter Monday, 9 April at Brands Hatch.
