Press Release:Readers of the UK’s biggest-selling bike publication – Motor Cycle News – have voted that Avon Tyres make some of the best tyres available for the popular Adventure Sport category of motorcycling.
More than 12,000 MCN readers take part in the weekly surveys and they placed both Avon’s Distanzia and Gripster tyres in their overall top 10 of Adventure Sport tyres. The Distanzia was placed sixth overall, with readers getting an average of 5500 miles from the tyres. In ninth place was Avon’s Gripster tyre, with an average mileage of 4990.
The Adventure Sport category has become one of the most popular in the UK in recent years, thanks to the television coverage of programmes such as ‘Long Way Round’ and ‘Long Way Down’, in which actor Ewan McGregor and his friend, Charley Boorman, undertook journeys aboard BMW’s R 1150 GS and R 1200 GS motorcycles.
Avon Tyres have been tested thoroughly in recent years by our own long-distance traveller and motorcycle writer – Sam Manicom.
Sam chose Avon Gripsters for his BMW R 80 GS thanks to their enviable reputation for grip and longevity. With more than 125,000 miles on Avons, no-one is more qualified to talk about their resilience and performance. Sam said: “With all the varied conditions that I was riding in, you need a tyre that will deal with them all and still give you good tyre life and excellent handling under the ‘normal’ conditions you expect to face. This could be loose sand, gravel, stone, dirt, mud, pot-holes or normal Tarmac.”
In eight years on Gripsters, Sam only suffered eight punctures and managed to get a best of 10,000 miles out of a rear tyre, but managed to get a staggering 21,000 from a Gripster front tyre.
This isn’t the first time Avon Tyres have scored highly in product surveys this year. MCN readers also voted the Avon Storm ST third in their choice of tyre in the popular sports touring sector while, in the 2009 RiDER Power Survey, the Avon Storm ST and Azaro ST figured in the top 10.
