The No To the Bike Parking Tax movement needs your support. The next demonstration is due to take place on the 7th of December and if you wish to continue parking your bike for free (in whatever borough), you should attend. The charges currently only affects Westminster, but will quickly spread to other councils country-wide if nothing is done by the people it affects - you and I, that is, motorcyclists.

Release:

The next demo –
7th December,
Meet between 6-6:45pm,
Park Lane Car Park

As we are demanding a Public Inquiry into the Pay-by-Phone system, so socially-exclusive to so many bikers, and with the prospect of such a Public Inquiry really exposing the highly-questionable motives and methods of implementation of the scheme, you wouldn't want to miss out by not being part of it. Please check out the website for full details of times and route.

The morning of the 7th December:

Not to be confused with the actual demo which is in the evening (full details on website) we have been encouraging as many of you who can take a few hours off that morning to join us in attending the next scheduled meeting of Partnerships-In-Parking, the subject of our Public Inquiry demands.

Suffice to say, a good turnout from us at this meeting will not only give an insight into the blatant anti-competition and EU Directive violations continually being committed by Alastair Gilchrist & his cronies, but will also leave them & the other Local Authorities represented there in no doubt about our reluctance to take their unjustified taxes lying down.

If you can join us, please ensure you are there by no later than 8.30am at Café Nero (opp entrance to Westminster City Hall in Victoria St, map on campaign home page here), and don’t worry about parking on Victoria Street itself. When it comes to entering the building, we will be able to advise you on where you should put your bike!!

"I use Pay by phone parking it's Brilliant" - I use it as well and have only encountered a problem once. It's a great gimmick except for the part where you have to pay (and the associated mess behind it all).
I'd rather not pay for the privilege of having a scooter jammed beside my bike causing it damage that I'm more than capable of doing myself )

I ride to work every day in Central London (and out at weekends!) and most of the time I can park for free (City Borough) if there are enough spaces. If not, then I need to park over the road in Westminster where I am forced to pay by phone. I have now had 6 tickets this year alone due to either not getting round to paying till I've got into the office (carrying too much stuff and in a rush) or have had tickets issued even though I have used their system and they claim it hasn't registered even though my phone tells me it has.

Every time I contest the ticket and a couple of times I have been let off. Either way, it is very clear that the whole reason for charging for parking is to get revenue from fines not the £1 a day for the parking fee. I have spent over £200 in fines this year alone and I have only parked around 10 times in total in paying bays. It is a complete rip-off to pay for parking a bike and it is another stealth tax placed on us by Westminster council.

A tip - keep an eye on the parking notice which are attached to the nearest lamposts as they have dates on as to when the bay may be suspended - this is a surefire way of getting a ticket if you don't check these daily.
