Press release:As the British Supermoto Championship headed North of the Border to the picturesque seaside Crail circuit in East Fife most people expected to see a resumption of the Iddon – Winstanley show but some of the up and coming names where determined to get a piece of the action, the result all action and definitely a lot of Blood Sweat & Gears!!
Saturday morning saw a damp start to proceedings for round 5 of the proppa.com! British Supermoto Championship, the mist in the air and overnight rain meant that the track was wet and so most riders started off on full wets, the organisers sensibly left out the major off road section for practice to protect the circuit. It did however dry out by lunchtime allowing most of the racing to take part on slicks.
In the Elite class it was Christian Iddon on his Team KTM Motoracing/Pemberton tyres KTM SMR ahead of Motosupplies Husqvarna's Matt Winstanley and Team Smith KTM's Ady Smith. The days racing saw Christian Iddon and Matt Winstanley locked together in a fantastic battle with little to separate the pair all day, so little in fact that there was less than a second between them at the end of all 3 races! Iddon just using the slight power advantage of his KTM to put a pass on Matt that made the watching crowd hold their breath Behind them, a great battle ensued for the final podium spot between Ady Smith, his team-mate on the Team Smith KTM Craig Venske and SMRacing Aprilia's Keith Farmer with the KTM's just edging out the Aprilia and Ady Smith taking 3rd from Craig Venske in 4th and Keith Farmer having a good day finishing 5th overall!
The Nameplate Services Lites class saw the usual duo of Ollie Harrison on the Skyzone KTM battling it out with Lewis Cornish, ending up with Ollie edging Lewis out for pole by .2 of a second. However it was a new name that took 3rd spot in the form of local lad Dougie Cunningham on his standard motocross CRF250 with a slick front and wet rear combination despite it being a wet qualifying session! Lee Rudd managed a respectable 4th on the TRM Honda with Malachi Mitchell Thomas coming home as the lead CRF150 in 5th spot. The races saw some close action and some controversial incidents but once all was done and dusted, it was local boy Dougie Cunningham who came out on top with some very impressive and consistent finishes in front of Lee Rudd and Ollie Harrison. This consistency was recognised with the award of the Michelin rider of the day & two brand new tyres. Joe Collier put in a solid performance to come home as the first 150 in the race with 4th overall and Lewis Cornish finishing 5th after a race 1 DNF.
It was Bruce Dingle who took charge in the SM Cup class with pole position and 3 straight wins and of course the overall and so it was left to the rest of the field to battle it out for the remaining positions. It was Chris Harrison who took 2nd on the grid from 2 other locals Jack Gow 3rd and Michael Craig 4th. The racing brought a mixture of results from the chasing pack with Chris Harrison, Jack Gow, Brad Davey, Mick Bertram and Gary Mclusky swapping places all day but it was to be Brad Davey that took 3rd on his RMZ450 from Jack Gow 3rd, Chris Harrison 4th and Gary Mclusky taking a credible 5th at his local track onboard his Kawasaki.
