Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Mat Mladin and Tommy Hayden dominated Saturday's AMA Superbike Championship race at Fontana in California with less than a second separating the duo at the end of 19 close-fought laps.

In a race shortened by two laps because of a red flag at the start, Hayden led 10 and Mladin nine with just 0.68-of-a-second between the two GSX-R1000s at the finish.

It was a race sponsored by Suzuki - and dominated by Suzukis - as third place went to Geoff May and fourth to new Rockstar Makita team rider Blake Young.

Mladin: "If there's anybody up here that I'd like to see win one, it's probably Hayden, but I'm not going to give it to him so I pushed him hard. It was a really good race."

National Guard Suzuki's May passed Young on the sixth lap to take the final podium spot. At the time that battle was for fourth as Michael Jordan Motorsports' Aaron Yates was holding down a comfortable third. But on the 11th lap Yates low-sided his GSX-R1000, finishing the race in 15th after pulling in to check the damage.
