| hows it going everyone? well if all goes wel..january should see me fully licensed and ready to go....and so ive been looking at potential 1st bikes and the zxr400 seems to suit my needs the most....not too powerfull (no experience prior to test adn course), cheap on insurance, sports bike shape etc etc but just wanted to know what u guys thought of it? anyone owned one? also becuase they are quite an old bike is it a case of theres a lot of dogs out there so stay away, or are there lil pots of gold to be found as it were... also, if not the zxr 400 what other bikes would u recomend?

| I worked on a ZXR400 race bike for a couple of years and would highly recommend one but would not rule out a CBR400 (NC29) or an FZR400 either.

Cracking little bikes, would make an excellent first ride !
Only thing is that they're popular for racing, so you need to make sure you don't end up with an ex-race one - usual tell-tale signs are things like bolts drilled for safety wire, chipped wheel rims due to lots of tyre changes, bodywork that's in much better condition than the rest of the bike etc.
There's plenty of them about, so no need to buy the first one you see, if you're unsure walk away. |

| | agreed with above, those 400's are pretty old now, so check them over carefully.. Depends also on what you want from the bike, and what size you are. If you are of a larger frame, then a 400 could be cramped, and maybe an old 600 (thundercat/steel frame CBR, pre 2000 ZX6R) especially if you want to do more motorway miles, etc.

| | thanks for the replies guys will defo look up the bikes u named Mr.ChunkyMonkey as alternatives, and whn i actually come round to looking for bikes ill keep an eye out for those tell-tail signs pat! i probably will be doing about 90% in town driving with the occasional motorway blast, i think im of a "medium" frame (5ft10 and stocky-ish) im trying/having to to shy away from 60 hundres as when i called up a couple insurance comapnies i was being told thing like 3 grand...7 grand...etc etc, i wanna get at least a years experience on a bike before i go for one of those...

| | Sounds like a 400 would be good for you then, have a look around, think there is a specific 400 grey import forum around somewhere...loads of info there. 'Mr' Chunky-Monkey......dont give him the wrong idea..

| | I had zxr400 as my first "proper" bike - absolutely loved it! Stunning front end - USD forks, small but revvy motor, tops out at 135mph (on private roads) The Zxr400 is not a grey import, so spares no bother- it's probably the fastest 400 out there, not as sexy as an NC29, but for the money, a great bike You don't have to get an "old" one - they were officially imported up til a few years ago. There may be a zxr400 forum - have a look.
